Many considerations for quality yak fiber
Yak fiber is becoming very popular because it is known to be better than cashmere. A "good fiber" yak is not necessarily a "super woolly" yak. The long hair is called "guard hair" on a yak. The long guard hair is not used in the yak down fiber for spinning fine fiber. The long guard hair is good for spinning and making tents and rope and for some rugs but not for fine down yak fiber. Yak DNA information is a must
CAUTION: I would recommend that you never buy a yak bull of any color without a DNA analysis!! It is commonly known by many yak owners/breeders that yaks have a certain amount of "Bos Taurus cattle" or other bovine DNA in them (average about 3% or less). Both IYAK and USYAKS register yaks and they both require 5% or less cattle introgression to be registered as a full yak.
