How Much Do Yaks Cost
By: Robert Stuplich
I have yaks for sale from $1,200.00 to $16,900.00. There are many variables. Color, sex, personality, tractability (how trainable), fiber quality, milk production, genetics (nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA), phenotype (what they look like), conformation (how the yak is structured), parentage line, medical history, fertile or infertile, coefficient of inbreeding, amount of cattle introgression, registered or not, halter trained or not, number of yaks purchased (group discount) and yes, for me, where they are going does make a difference. We breed mainly for color, personality, tractability and fiber. We always recommend that yak buyers visit the yak breeder’s operation before buying a yak to see how the yaks are treated. We spend a lot of money to send in all our yaks to USYAKS to register them with a DNA analysis from GeneSeek so you know exactly what you are buying. We have mostly a low “Coefficient of Inbreeding” and we also sell both “full blood yaks” and “hybrid yaks”. “Full blood yaks” are yaks that have less than 3% cattle introgression (the requirement to register a yak with USYAKS) (IYAK requires 5% or less). “Hybrid yaks” have more than 5% cattle introgression. All yaks have some cattle introgression. All this means that you probably have questions. You can give me a call at (970) 209-1356 to ask if you wish. I love to yak about our yaks.
