Yak facts
Why buy a Yak… ride, pack or pull, meat milk or wool!
- Yaks are compatible with most agricultural operations, no special fencing… existing cattle facilities are fine.
- Yaks are livestock and qualify for certain tax advantages, no permits are needed to own yaks.
- Yaks are income-producing…you can feed 3 yak on what it takes to feed 1 beef cow!
- Yaks are disease-resistant, cold-climate hardy and economical even in drought conditions!
- Yaks are "easy keepers" and do not require special diets…they generally live 20-25+ years.
- Yaks are quiet animals, can be docile and are easily tamed.
- Yaks have an “Old World” pleasing look, there are less than 4,000 yaks in the U.S.A
- Yaks provide useful products of meat, *fiber, milk and hide.
- Yak meat has a superb, delicate, beef-like flavor, and Yaks can be readily cross-bred with cattle.
- Yak cows can reach 800#, calve easily and are bred at 18-24 months, have a gestation period of 8 & 1/2 months, and normally produce a single offspring weighing about 25# at birth.
- Yak bulls can reach 1600# at maturity (7 yrs) and are able to breed at the age of 18 months.
Yak calves (weanlings/yearlings) are available for $2200-$2400. depending on color & sex (package deals are available). All calves have been socialized with humans on a daily basis…most will eat out of your hand.
*Fiber info… 15-18 microns (very fine and very warm!) the fiber can be used to make hats, sweaters, shawls, blankets and the longer guard hairs can be used to weave rope. The money you make on the fiber helps pay for their hay for the winter. Yak fiber is available in raw form. We collect it right off the yak…not off the ground! The fiber is very clean with little to no debris.
