Association (MAA). As an alpaca farmer herself, she knows ''an alpaca
farmer is different from a traditional livestock farmer. It requires a
whole different skill set.''
We are not out of the cold just yet--when it comes to winter weather and
a new business in Spanishburg is opening to help folks prepare for the

Fire Destroys Somers Barn

Firefighters spent much of Friday night battling a barn fire at an
alpaca farm in Somers. The fire broke out just after 6PM Friday at
Clear Mountain Alpacas on Pioneer Heights.
Since its establishment by the alpaca fibre processing industry in
Arequipa in 1984, the International Alpaca Association (IAA) has been at
the forefront of efforts to maintain the quality of alpaca fibre from
the farm gate to the final consumer ever since. Prior to the formation
of the IAA, the alpaca fibre sector was somewhat disorganised with a
wide range of fibre finenesses that were not always commercially
repeatable as well as blends with wool masquerading as 100% alpaca.

Tom Quinn of the Black
Diamond Alpaca Farm feeds his herd of 29 alpacas at his barn in
Pataskala. Quinn raised cattle before switching to alpacas nine years
ago. He said raising the small animals, which are similar to llamas, is
stress-relieving. He sells their wool for use in knitted and woven
items. Quinn said he also hosts field trips for groups such as students,
Girl Scouts and nursing-home residents.
Where can you get fresh vegetables, beautiful music,
classic art, alpaca yarn and bat houses, sit in a pharaoh's chair or eat
red velvet cake pops and giant chocolate chip cookies, all under one
roof? At the Fitchburg Farmers Winter Market at the Fitchburg Art
Museum, of course.

intensions were to use the animals as organic lawnmowers, and sell
alpaca fleece for $7 to $10 a pound. However, the city code in New Ulm

Heidi Pinard thought it was time for a change. They wanted to raise
their three sons — Zack, Tyler and Logan— in a rural setting. After
looking at a few places, the Pinards decided to purchase 37 acres
near Stockton, where the family eventually would move to in 2005.

TASMANIA'S premium alpaca
fleece is commanding high prices but an industry leader has suggested
there could be a future in alpaca meat.
According to mayor Ángel Vilcahuamán Puma, heavy snowfall in the
southern region of Arequipa has resulted in the recent death of 3,680
alpaca. The snowfall and subsequent loss of livestock occurred at
altitudes between 3.800 and 5.000 meters high. The death toll had the
largest impact on pregnant and baby alpaca. Callalli is reported to be
the home of about 80,000 alpaca.
