Organic Feed! American Guinea Hogs, Barred Rock Chicken, Rouen Ducks
Judson and Christy along with their 7 children enjoy raising healthy, happy American Guinea Hogs, Barred (Plymouth) Rock Chickens and Rouen Ducks. The Keen Acres Farm is operated using rotational grazing in which the animals are regularly moved to fresh, chemical-free, pasture paddocks. This rotational grazing method ensures our livestock the opportunity to eat the most nutritious native grasses available while keeping parasite loads naturally low by interrupting their 21 day reproduction cycle. Along with rotational grazing, Keen Acres uses sea mineral salts, organic kelp, diatomaceous earth and a bi-annual sulfur treatment to keep animals naturally free from parasites. Additionally, we hand mix our own corn free, soy free, organic whole grains feed.
American Guinea Hogs are our absolute favorite farm animal! They are highly intelligent and friendly. Adult American Guinea Hogs range in height from 22 to 27 inches tall, and 46 to 56 inches long. Their mature weight is 250 to 400 pounds. They are excellent mothers, and even the boars tolerate the little ones well. Guinea Hogs are docile and can be pastured with other farm animals. Their smaller size, easy temperament and independent foraging make them the perfect homestead pig! We hand select our herd and only keep those that meet our favorite criteria for Guinea Hog cuteness! Keen Acres Guinea Hogs are fully black, have short but ample snouts, plenteous hair, well positioned and numerous teats and are quick to roll over for a belly rub!
Barred (Plymouth) Rock Chickens are amazing grazing birds. Given the chance they will forage for most of their food. The Barred Rock (Plymouth Rock) chicken is one of the all-time, popular favorites in the U.S. They can't be beat for steady, reliable chickens. This Heritage Breed was developed in New England in the early 1800's by crossing Dominiques and Black Javas. Since then, the breed has spread to every part of the U.S., and is an ideal, American chicken.
They are hardy, dual-purpose chickens and prolific brown egg layers with hens laying even through the cold winter months. At maturity roosters can weigh up to 9.5 lbs!
Gorgeous Rouen ducks. This duck descends directly from the wild Mallard duck and has all the same beauty. The Rouen duck is meaty, weighing 7lb minimum and more often 9lbs. for drakes. It has maintained its wild duck plumage: a greenish-yellow beak, a green head, a brown chest and a white collar. Its stomach is pearl grey, the wings ash grey with green highlights and blue reflectors, and a shiny black tail. It is very elegant. It's a large meat bird, it's eggs are creamy white going very light green, weighing at least 3oz. The ducklings grow quickly and can be eaten starting from 10-12 weeks. It is a breed known for its delicate, juicy meat.
