As the Fleece Grows
Mr Slippers fleece our cria before shearing
We are getting excited to see this years harvest of yummy oh so soft Alpaca fleece! Shearing is right around the corner and our 10 alpacas are really growing some bright fiber. After our fleece is shorn I then skirt the fiber getting out any vegetable matter like hay and dirt. Then I grade my fleeces then take off the hairy parts around the chest and belly. This I’ll use for dryer balls later. After which I’ll bag up the fiber and ship it off to a local fiber mill to have processed into Cloud, Roving and yarns for my customers to use when knitting scarfs, Hats etc. I also use this fiber to wet felt Dryer Balls, Soaps and Knitted Hats.
The alpacas need to be shorn once a year to keep them cool during the hot summer months. In order to grow strong fiber we must provide them with special minerals made for alpacas plus good quality Orchard hay with feed made for alpacas. We provide them with pasture and fans to keep them cool during the heat along with cool clean water.
All of our alpacas are DNA tested, Registered with Alpaca Owners Association and microchipped.
We also sell the raw fleece right off the alpaca for fiber artist. Go to Our Facebook page Healing Hearts Alpacas and keep up on our latest journey!
Alpaca is Moisture Wicking, Antimicrobial and has no lanolin in it! A Earth Friendly product.
