If you don’t already have an alpaca sweater in your
closet, that soon may change. The alpaca, a cousin of both the camel and
the llama, was brought to the
United States in significant numbers in the early 1980s, and the
current U.S. alpaca herd is estimated in the range of 125,000 to
250,000. Animals are shorn about once a year for their small fiber,
which is considered in the same luxury category as mohair or cashmere.
Until a few years ago, the economic foundation of the U.S. alpaca

The Gentler Life
Burleson Now: December Issue
Davis Reiling and his folks, Ron and Denise, moved to
Burleson shortly after Denise received a breast cancer diagnosis. They
decided to give up the city and fancy Dallas job to live somewhere
peaceful and do something they love: raise alpacas. Since 2003, Davis
has gone to Holy Cross Christian Academy. For the school’s float in the
Burleson Rotary Club Christmas Parade, Davis and his mother escorted
their pet alpacas, which remind a lot of people of camels or llamas. In
fact, while Davis was a fifth-grader, his alpacas played the Three Wise
Men’s
camels in the HCCA Live Nativity. But Davis knows the difference between
a camel, known to spit and hiss, and an alpaca, which makes a soft,
pretty humming sound. (Article on Page 11)

Love Them Alpacas
Gilroy Today: Monday, November 28, 2011
Some people have a plan and live life by it. For others, life is an
adventure... you never know what is next. For Robin and Richard Vasquez
of R&R Ranch, life is more adventure than plan. Robin worked
through a career in the medical field and then did financial advising.
When her father’s former prune orchard was no longer viable and the
renters choose not to row crop it any longer, Richard and Robin went
looking for something to raise on the 20 acres. Richard, an electrician
by trade, who recently sustained a neck injury, put in a bid for
horses. Robin had seen too many horse-related accidents in her emergency
room days. Next they thought about cattle but Robin has a tendency to
name animals so the thought of eating “Betsy” made them
uncomfortable…and they only had 20 acres.
