What a girl! From the first moment we saw her dark gray popcorn fleece and adorable head, we fell in love with her. It’s said that the Greek god Atlas’s eldest and most beautiful daughter’s name was Maia. Roman origins state that Maia means “good milking mother” and the way Maia has taken after her mother, that is most appropriate.
This girl has it all! She is our eldest daughter of the amazing Charles P. Atlas, whose first time competition for Get of Sire won him a blue ribbon out of 13 groups. With all Charles P. Atlas has going for him and her championship dam, Snugglers’ Peruvian Carmeltina who has thrown amazing offspring, Maia is a true winner and has made a wonderful foundation dam.
One comment from a vet who sees a great many crias was, “how could you do better than that?” and his assistant stated Maia was the softest cria she had felt all year. Maia’s beautiful, consistent, crimpy fleece placed 2nd at Nationals 2010 and 1st at Alpacafest 2010, but add to that her density, wonderful bone, fantastic conformation, beautiful dark silver gray color, gorgeous “Charlie” head, personality plus, AND so much presence that we call her “The Princess!” She was the most fantastic cria we’ve seen and has gone on to prove herself by throwing four gorgeous, very showy females including the 2012 grey Nat'l Champion Storybook Princess, all with perfect confirmation and beautiful fleece. Her 2012 cria, Fair Princess, is an amazingly showy modern dark silver grey. And her 2013 cria, Nod, is a beautiful sweet girl as well!
Maia couldn’t seem to leave the ring without taking a blue or championship including a Reserve in her first show at the 2008 OABA AlpacaFest, being only 6 months old as well as Champion at the 2009 Buckeye show. Even when stuck in a class by herself she received the comment, "she could have easily taken 1st in a class of 10 or more!"
We have truly enjoyed having Maia and her wonderful, proud offspring in our herd. The next chapter of the story has begun. Thank you to Jeff Hull and Nancy Lake of Grey Alpaca Company who have generously purchased Maia for their breeding program and to help with the Alpacas for Asylum effort to save a family from genocide. Watch for her next offspring in the ring!
