Neruda sports a fleece that is exotic in color and extremely fine. His sire, Shackleton maintained a baby-fine fleece even at 9 years of age. Neruda's crias are extremely fine, yet dense and free of guardhair. They typically have beautiful heads and dense bone.
We bought Patagonia's Neruda at the 2007 Futurity Show and Sale and he is now part of our group of elite Herdsires. His previous owners at Alpacas de la Patagonia considered him one of their top three herdsires.
Patagonia reserved him for client use only and as a result, outside breedings to Neruda were ALWAYS been restricted. He was "a cornerstone of their black and grey breeding program" giving them their "FINEST black and grey fleeces that are virtually free of medullated fiber".
At 8 years of age his histogram is 23.1m/5.3sd/22.9cv/9.2%>30. Neruda's crias are easily identifiable by their extremely fine fleeces, beautiful heads, substantially thick bone and extensive fiber coverage. With more than 120 crias on the ground, Neruda has proven that when bred to black or grey females, 96% of the resulting offspring have been black or grey in color.
Neruda's sire Shackleton, a black male brought from Chile, was for many years one of the finest fleeced males found in Patagonia. This is remarkable if we consider that 10 years ago, the difference in fineness between black and white alpacas was much more apparent than it is today. At three years of age Shackleton's histogram was 18.9m/3.8sd/20.1cv/1.2%>30.
Neruda's dam Kodiak is true maroon in color and her offspring have been dark brown, black and grey. At three years of age her histogram was 18.3m/3.7sd/20.2cv/1.1%>30. Neruda is now available for limited outside breedings with a maximum of 10 per calendar year. We have a selected group of a few females bred to Neruda that are for sale and are due this fall.
Neruda is co-owned by Aconcagua Alpaca Farm and Greenbriar Farm - MAM Consulting Associates Inc.
