Topic "Openherd Auctions" a message from joe

Hi,

If your auction has a winning bidder, their contact information is displayed in your account after the auction ends so that you can get in touch. All sales are directly between the seller and buyer, so you would note any sale terms on your alpaca detail page before you list the auction to make sure the seller knows what the terms are, what's included and what's not.

Once the auction ends, you will initiate the sales contract directly with the buyer. Openherd is not a party in the sales agreement, we just help to find buyers through the auctions/bidding process.

Hope this helps!

Joe
Openherd.com

I would like to know more about these Openherd auctions. I know that I can place alpacas for auction and certain reserve prices and set them for a length of time. Question is what happens if you sell some of them. Who is responsible for arranging transportation from my farm to the buyers farm or can this be negotiated. How do I contact someone if their bid is successful. Is there a write up on this site for auction particulars.

I'd love some tips or respectable resources on halter training. I've definitely been lax in this area for our new cria and feel like I'm losing ground. I've attended Marty's 1 day Basics and looking forward to the 2 day Basics coming up next month so I'm familiar with balancing, etc. Just curious what methods you all have tried when halter training cria and up to 1 year.
Topic "Can moldy hay kill an alpaca?" a message from Nancylipscomb

This winter has been extremely difficult for us to find any quality hay in our area. We bought several round bales and took off the worst part on the outside, and any other that was moldy. The bad stuff was put a side and some of our alpacas got into it and ate it. We now have lost tow of our males and possibly will another, for unknown reasons. We were wondering if the hay could be the cause. We know it's not good for them but is it toxic enough to kill?
Thanks
Charlene
Enchantedoaksfarm.com

Topic "How do I find a buyer for my fiber?" a message from alpacacountry

Preparation for Shearing: We try to blow them off using a hand held leaf blower a few days before we plan to shear - don't laugh, it works well. No bathing necessary - no one I know does this.

We lay out the fiber to be sure it is cool and no condensation can form - then use large plastic bags (lots of folks put dryer sheets in each bag to keep moths away) tie the bag closed - I use one bag for each blanket (1sts), then the 2nds and back similar colors together, usually end up with a light bag of seconds and a dark bag of seconds - that fiber will be used differently.

Selling fiber: some folks set up a table at the local farmer's market, some sell online, we have trade shows we can sell through. it is sold either by the ounce, my preference; or by the pound. Entire fleeces are usually sold at a slight discount.

From an operational standpoint, it is wise to track your fleece weights from year to year by animal.

Hope that is what you were looking for,
Cathy

Topic "Alpaca start-up" a message from alpacacountry

I would offer these suggestions, I understand you may have already thought of them, but it was not specific in your post. Funding options that I am familiar with include: seller financing, grants, small business administration loans, and the US Dept of Agriculture - some info is here: http://www.usda.gov/documents/FARM_LOAN_PROGRAMS.pdf

As far as the business plan templates and such, don't get too buried in that. Simple is good. As you visit operating alpaca ranches, take notes of the actual elements that are part of the operation. Note that everyone does things a little differently and accomplishes the same goal. Don't let someone convince you that there is only one way to get there from here. Start ups can be efficient and they can be expensive, you make the choice.

Other things that I gleaned from your post that I can speak to from our experience. We should have purchased the animals when our cash flow was good and used the boarding opportunity as we did not have our land at the time the cash flow was the best. So sometimes the order in which you do things is unique to your situation.

Good Luck,
Cathy

Hi Marty, we have four alpaca girls acquired from a farm in Canada. They were never halter trained at all. Whenever they had to handle the animals, they just herded them wherever and then did, what needed to be done. All four handle really well, once you get a hold of them (in a catch pen!). Three girls have adapted to being led on a halter. The fourth girl, however, acts as if the halter will kill her once it's applied. She will bang her chin on the ground and act like a wild woman. I've tried getting her accustomed to the halter "your" way. She isn't receptive at all. What else can I do?

Topic "Body Scoring Saves Alpaca Lifes!!!Rising Sun Alpac" a message from risingsunalpacas

"Body scoring your Alpaca is the #1 easiest way for you to save and Alpaca life!! If they are too thin and if they are too fat they may develop milking problems (big Headache). if your/our Alpaca has a body score of (1 it is very near death and requires immediate attention they usually/may need IV fluids and oral electrolytes, B-Complex, Pro-biotic paste with vitamins, fecal sample (due to time for sample, we treat for worms/Coccidia, & more) Shot IVO/ Safeguard or Valbasin and a Corid or Albon treatment over a 2-week period, (this is just our opinion, NOT FACT) Pleases call your Vet.. **They need free choice very good grass and Alfalfa hay and free choice Alpaca feed, access to minerals and good water...TALK TO YOUR VET.
Many reasons for a body score of (1) Malnutrition from worms/parasites... poor hay, cria kept on mom too long, Rumin shut down, illness on & on...Call your veterinarian but whatever you do you MUST ACT FAST!! it can take Months to recover...but only days to die

With a body score of 5 They are fat and not healthy just like me/Mike (fat Belly). There is a growing epidemic in the alpaca industry of overweight or obese animals/humans.
Alpacas that are kept at or near optimum condition (Body score of 3) will live longer, have more productive lives. They will have fewer complications during pregnancy, Birthing, and lactation, and will produce fiber close to their genetic potential.

***Grain, usually in the form of pre-bagged supplements, is often overfed. There are animals which can get fat on pasture and too much Alfalfa in their hay......

Being overweight is associated with milking problems (and at least in one seminar that I attended a higher rate of dystocias).it's not recommended to put a fat pregnant female on a diet- many potential problems can arise with significant calorie/nutrients restrictions. Better to slowly/gradually cut back on grain fed over a period of weeks keeping long term goals in mind. Taking an alpaca for long walks (good for us all) and upping their movement, moving the hay so that it's a longer walk to barn/pasture.....Less food & more activity

Alpacas are very stoic animals and may not seem sick to you/us, when actually they could be extremely ill. Observations and BODY SCORING!! your Alpacas is the key to success! call your vet if you are not sure. Hesitating may be fatal to your alpaca.
Love your Pacas
Rising Sun Alpacas (would love to hear feedback here) Thanks Mike & Suzy
edited by risingsunalpacas on 4/6/2013

Due to the fact that his was our only income, it is necessary to immediately downsize our herd of 15 boys and 21 girls. All alpacas are maintained in good health and can be ARI registered. I simply cannot continue to care for this many with no employment and no income. I will entertain all reasonable cash offers and happily negotiate optimal packages. Please contact us for any other information. Sincere thanks and I hope to be able to continue in this industry and will agist any purchases if needed. We have many fine studs available to do breeding for open dams, but would especially like to see half of the boys go to new homes and the suris. We are only on 2 acres. Sincere thanks to all.
Topic "DNA Testing" a message from promised land alpacas

This is a problem that crops up from time to time. The first thing to do is to contact ARI and find out how many markers your cria has in common with the original herdsire. The folks at ARI are very patient and helpful. They will go over all the markers with you and explain how the matching works. If that herdsire has ALMOST enough markers to qualify it might be as simple as submitting a new sample for the sire and checking for additional markers to see if enough of the additional markers match to qualify him as the sire.

If there are very common markers between the cria and the presumed sire you are going to have to consider other males. Don't forget that males as young as 8 months have been known to father crias (almost always when you don't want them to). Check any males that may have been on the property in the month or so following the supervised breeding. If there was an "unsupervised" breeding within a few weeks of the supervised one the birthing time could appear to fit with the original breeding date because gestation times in alpacas are so variable.

If you try all these things and still can't figure it out I would contact Dr Shauna Brummet, PhD of Hobby Horse Farm. Shauna is a geneticist and the science officer of ARI. She was instrumental in establishing ARI's DNA testing program and can be a great resource for the tough problems. Really great person as well.

I hope these suggestions will be helpful to you.

Smiles,

Dr. Ruthanne

I recently tried to register a new cria. The breeding to produce this cria was supervised, and yet the DNA of the hersire used does not match. A second sample was sent in, and came back the same. I've had it compared to all the males on my farm to rule them out. At the time of the breeding, two other females were bred the same day, each with a different herdsire. All three gave birth within a two week period, so I assume the breeding took. I also had the other hersires used that day compared to rule them out, and they failed to match. The dam's breeding was supervised, and the breeding farm and myself are certain that the hersire used is indeed the sire. What would you do next?
