THE RANCH

Have you ever had a chance encounter that changes your life's direction, if so, you will understand how my husband and I have come to cherish these beautiful animals.


Ours took place when my husband was stationed in Santiago, Chile on Marine Security Guard Duty at the United States Embassy. During a family trip to see the glaciers in the Andean mountains on horseback, we encountered some very unusual animals grazing in the meadows.


Thoughts included baby llamas or some relation to the camels we had seen in the Middle East, but where did all that hair come from? We now know they were Suri’s in full fleece (with several years growth) and Huacaya Alpacas.


In 2005 I was invited to the Great Western Alpaca Show by some very dear friends that were interested in raising alpacas and I came face to face with the enchanting animals we had met in the mountains of Chile many years ago.


The ranch was established in 2006 with the addition of a barn, corral and our first alpacas. Velvet, Chrysanthemum and Gwendolin came home to our 40 acres on the eastern plains of Colorado near Calhan to a magnificent view of Pikes Peak.
